Liver 3: An Acupoint to Get the Qi Moving

Liver 3 (Tai Chong or Supreme Rushing) is another common acupuncture point that I regularly use in my Clinic. It's among my favourite points to use as it's one of the 'Four Gates', so great for enabling Qi to move more freely around the body. This relieves pain and upset, as the Qi isn't allowed to stagnate.

LV3 is a very calming point, for those who've read previous posts about the Chinese 5 Elements, you'll remember that the Liver is Wood and the latter's emotion is anger.

Fertility acupuncture patients may have noticed that I often use this point during your treatment. This is because one function of the Liver is to store blood so this, in part, relates it to the menstrual cycle.I also like to use LV3 for eye problems and headaches too.

N.B. LV3 is considered safe during pregnancy however, as your acupuncturist will be able to locate the exact position, I recommend that my patients consult with me before using any acupressure points once pregnant or if you think you may be pregnant.

You can try this point yourself by using acupressure at its location between the first and second metatarsals on the top of the foot. If you run your finger along the space between the big toe and the second toe, you'll find a slight dip where the metatarsals meet. Press down lightly with your index or middle finger and use a gentle circling motion over the point highlighted in green on our picture. Do this for between 30 seconds to 2 minutes to get the Qi moving.

Endometriosis Awareness Week: March 5th - 11th

With over 2 million women suffering from this painful condition in the UK alone, we wanted to highlight Endometriosis Awareness Week, which runs from March 5th - 11th 2012.

So, what is endometriosis? Endometriosis UK is a very informative site and this excerpt, taken from their website, outlines the condition:

"Endometriosis is a gynaecological condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb, grows in other areas of the body, most commonly in the pelvic region. This tissue responds to hormones in the same way as the lining of the womb but with no outlet it can cause inflammation, scarring and adhesions, leading to severe pain and many other symptoms."

There's an average time of 8 years from first symptoms to diagnosis, which is an incredibly long time, so raising awareness of this issue is important. I would recommend taking a look at the website if you have, or suspect you may have this condition, as they offer a really good support network to sufferers. There are also factsheets that you can download and a forum to chat with others who have this condition.

As a Zita West Affiliated Fertility Acupuncturist, I see a lot of women at The Mitchell Hill Clinic who have endometriosis. There are a variety of complementary therapies, such as hypnotherapy and homeopathy that may also be able to help and Endometriosis UK has downloadable documents that explain how each works in more detail. For those of you interested in how acupuncture may help, I'll take the opportunity to explain here:

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, endometriosis is caused by blood not flowing smoothly in the uterus, this 'blood stasis' can be encouraged to flow more freely by needling certain points on the ears and body. I'm pleased to say that I've found success in regulating menstrual cycles and alleviating pain through regular acupuncture sessions. Many women experience a swift result in relation to their cycle. The other benefit of acupuncture is the general effect it has on your wellbeing and the common response is that energy and mood are vastly improved following treatment.

The Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine published a study in their December 2002 issue. Researchers chose 67 women diagnosed with painful periods, otherwise known as dysmenorrhea, due to endometriosis. After half the group received ear acupuncture treatments, it was reported that 81% of these women had less painful periods.

Current research shows that acupuncture seems to regulate hormones, promote blood flow and, due to its effect on endorphin levels, can be effective for pain relief.

Holistic Pediatrics: Acupressure for Children

The gentle art of acupressure is ideal for children and anyone who would prefer a no-needles approach.

As with adults, treatment is unique to the child. A detailed history is taken from the parent prior to the treatment and I also talk to the child directly so that they understand that I'm here to help.

I always start with acupressure, but after a few visits, children start to become more open to trying the needles and often end up braver than the parents! For younger children the needles are inserted, then quickly removed, whilst Mum or Dad keeps them entertained. For older children, I'm able to leave the needles for a little longer whilst they rest and listen to the calming music in the room.

I aim to make the whole experience fun, most kids are so mesmerised by my arms (if you've met me, you'll no doubt know why!), that they barely notice the treatment.

Pediatric acupressure can be used for a range of childhood ailments as well as helping many similar conditions I regularly treat in adults.

How to Give Yourself a Boost With Acupressure

Known as Zu San Li, the 'Stomach 36' point translates as 'Three Leg Mile'. This is one of my favourite points, especially at this time of the year, as it can give your energy levels a much needed boost.

Its unusual name gives us a clue to its use; it's believed to come from the practice, in ancient China, of foot soldiers stopping every three miles to rub the point to give them more energy to continue.

As this is a Stomach point, it's also great for strengthening and regulating the digestive system. Incidentally, ancient physicians believed this point could be used to 'treat all diseases'!

ST36 can also be a very relaxing point as it helps to calm the mind, plus your acupuncturist may use it to tonify blood and Qi deficiencies.

Caution: Do not use the following point if pregnant, or if youthink you could be pregnant.

It's a little tricky to locate at about 'four fingers' width below the kneecap, in the dip between the shinbone and the leg muscle. Ask me next time you're at The Mitchell Hill Clinic for treatment, if you have any difficulty. Once located, this point can be gently massaged with your index finger or middle finger for a couple of minutes to give yourself a burst of energy.

Remember, this point is useful for a boost, but don't use it purely to keep forging ahead, when what you really need is a good night's sleep!

As always, we're talking about one of the most popularly used points of over 350 commonly used acupuncture points in the human body. So, it doesn't solely rely on an in-depth diagnosis to prove beneficial. Of course it's best to visit your acupuncturist first to determine the best course of treatment for your particular condition.

New Fertility Support Group Launches in Truro

A new specialist fertility service is now available at The Mitchell Hill Clinic - Acupuncture & Natural Health Centre in Truro.

The Fertile Body Method combines hypnosis and other mind-body approaches to help identify and address the mental, emotional and physical factors which affect fertility and reduce the negative effects of infertility.

Hypnotherapist Angela Coote joins Paul Adkins and the team at The Mitchell Hill Clinic to provide clients with an additional approach to their highly regarded fertility acupuncture treatments.

Can Acupuncture Help Stress, Anxiety & Depression?

As a Traditional 5 Element Acupuncturist, in my experience, acupuncture can be used to help all of the above. There are, of course, a variety of factors that can contribute to a person developing stress, anxiety and depression, and they can be interlinked. I regularly see people at the Clinic suffering from all, or a combination, of these three debilitating conditions. This time of year, in particular, can be particularly difficult for many.

Stress can manifest itself in a variety of ways, physical symptoms such as headache, backache and sleeping problems are common and extremely draining.

Anxiety and depression can result due to, among other things, childbirth, hormonal problems, stress itself, bereavement and can also be known to run in families.

I take an in-depth personal history to determine the circumstances or conditions contributing to, or causing the problem. I'll then assess the patient's pulses and discover the related symptoms.

My main aim is to put the whole body, mind and spirit back into balance. I do this by using 5 Element Acupuncture; a system that works by determining the patient's element and treating it accordingly.

Sufferers generally display low levels of the mood enhancing brain chemicals known as dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin and GABA. Acupuncture stimulates the Central Nervous System releasing chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord and brain, thus promoting the body's natural healing ability. Treatment has been shown to have a calming effect, producing a feeling of well-being, helping to combat stress.

One study concluded that 70% of patients treated with Acupuncture experienced a 50%, or greater, reduction in their symptoms. 1.

Researchers at the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine found that six weeks of Acupuncture resulted in a decrease in slow wave delta waves and an increase in fast alpha brain waves, associated with relaxation. 2.

Acupuncture has been used to treat the side effects and dependence of sleeping pills, tranquilizers and anti-depressants. Although it must be stressed that prospective patients must consult their doctors before attempting to alter any medication that they've been prescribed.

Consultations are completely confidential, I have much experience in dealing with stress, anxiety and depression and I'm pleased to say that I've helped many patients to improve and overcome a range of related conditions.

To manage anxiety levels in-between acupuncture treatments, you may also be interested in a previous post on tension headaches, which discusses the acupressure point Yin Tang (pictured). This point can be used for calming the mind and the point Heart 7, that I introduced in my blog last month, is another point to help ease anxiety. Stimulate these points in this order (Yin Tang followed by Heart 7), using the techniques described in the posts, to help bring the energy down when you start to feel anxious.

Feeling Sick? An Acupressure Point for Nausea

As a Zita West Affiliated Fertility Acupuncturist I’m fortunate to regularly support women throughout the early stages of their pregnancy. Therefore, with around 50 to 80 per cent of all pregnant women experiencing nausea or vomiting, something I’m often called upon to help with is morning sickness.

A 2009 review from The Cochrane Collaboration (See 1.) showed that the classical acupuncture point Pericardium 6 (Neiguan or Inner Gate), significantly reduces the symptoms of nausea and vomiting following surgery.

Further trials have shown that acupuncture can also treat nausea, associated with morning sickness and chemotherapy. Have you seen those wrist bands that people wear if they suffer from motion sickness? Well, P6 is the point that they're working on.

The Pericardium channel runs from the middle finger, making its way through the chest and into the stomach. Stimulating P6 helps the qi to flow downwards and calm the digestive tract.

So, it’s well worth visiting your acupuncturist to help alleviate the problem. I create a unique treatment plan based on the reasons behind your symptoms and tend to use a combination of points depending on the patient. However, if you’re looking to maximise the effects between treatments, using this acupressure point can be beneficial.

N.B. P6 is considered safe during pregnancy however, as your acupuncturist will be able to locate the exact position, I recommend that my patients consult with me before using any acupressure points once pregnant.

The point is located a sixth of the way between your wrist and elbow. So, if you visually divide this section in half, P6 will be a third of the way from your wrist crease (see picture). If you feel between the two tendons that run down the centre of the inside of your arm, it will be a little tender at the acupressure point.

Press down lightly with your index or middle finger and use a gentle circling motion over the point highlighted in green on our picture. Do this for between 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

Craving Point Sessions Available for Dec 2011

This season can be challenging if you're working hard to lose weight or maintain your achievements so far.

Traditional 5 Element Acupuncturist Paul Adkins is introducing a three session package in the run-up to Christmas at The Mitchell Hill Clinic Acupuncture & Natural Health Centre in Truro to help you through the month.

A study published in the Journal of Medical Acupuncture in 2003 found that the use of auricular acupuncture (outlined above) on one group as opposed to a control group, resulted in the 'Acupuncture' group losing three times more weight.

An Acupressure Point to Calm and Soothe

Point location itself is complex and takes many years to master, but there are some points that can be used successfully with basic acupressure techniques. The acupoint that follows doesn’t solely rely on an in-depth diagnosis to prove beneficial. Of course it's best to visit your acupuncturist first to determine the best course of treatment for your particular condition.

Can’t sleep? Feeling nervous or anxious? Heart 7 (pictured) is known in Chinese as Shen Men and translated as Spirit Gate or Mind Door, this acupoint is often used to strengthen the mind and to reduce heart palpitations. It’s located on the wrist crease, in line with the little finger, and in my experience is very effective for calming the mind, soothing anxiety and combating insomnia due to an over-excited mind.

Simply apply light pressure and use a gentle circling motion with your index finger or middle finger over the point highlighted in green on our picture. This can be done quite discreetly during times of anxiety or nervousness, perhaps during an event or function. Also, as mentioned above, if you wake in the middle of the night, try this to help you rest and relax. Aim to spend at least 5 minutes massaging Heart 7, but use only when needed.

The Water Element in Ba Zi Chinese Astrology

There’s only 2 Chinese animals left of the 12; the Pig and the Rat. So, if you have either of these in your Ba Zi astrology chart, the Water element was present in the qi on the day/time you were born.

As you’ll know by now, there are yin and yang aspects of each element. Yin Water is like dew and gentle rain, as opposed to yang Water which is like the roaring ocean, rivers and streams.

Therefore, it’s easy to see how people born on yin Water or yang Water days may differ in their general traits although, as always, we need to look at the whole chart to see how this element interacts with the others.

It’s still fun to take a look at well-known yin and yang Water elements. For instance: Bill Gates, Simon Cowell, Johnny Depp, Prince Charles, HH Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Tom Cruise and Naomi Campbell are all Water day elements. Any ideas who’s yin Water and who might be yang Water?

Yin Water day elements = HH Dalai Lama, Prince Charles, Johnny Depp and Mother Teresa. Yang Water day elements = Simon Cowell, Tom Cruise, Naomi Campbell and Bill Gates. Did you guess right?

The Officials of the Water Element

The two officials of the Water element are the bladder and kidneys. Makes sense right? Between them they govern the major aspects of our vital fluids. They're of the greatest importance to the whole of the body and other officials, as none of them can function without water.

The kidney official is known as the ‘official who controls the waterways’. This, however, may be a little misleading as the kidney does far more. Ancient Chinese philosophy believed that the kidney official was the storehouse for ancestral energy that was passed on to each generation. This essence is called Kidney Jing and is derived from both pre and post-heaven essence. The pre-heavenly essence is inherited from our parents at conception. It can be gradually depleted throughout our lifetime unless it’s conserved well. The post-heavenly essence is taken from food and nourishment and can be replenished. This supply can be called upon when we have heavy physical or mental tasks to cope with.

The bladder is known as the ‘official of the municipal waterways’ and is the reservoir of the body, mind and spirit. It’s the reserve that we draw from in the winter when things are running low. If there's no reserve to draw from then our health and wellbeing will be affected.

As well as being a reservoir, the bladder is also charged with disposing of the impurities that are found in our urine. So, if these are left to build up and are not disposed of, this can eventually pollute our whole being. If the bladder is out of balance, it may not be able to keep its fluids in its boundaries. This may manifest as incontinence and cystitis type infections.

The bladder is one of the few officials that’s similar in its descriptions of use, both in Chinese and Western medicine. It’s also the longest meridian on the body with sixty-seven acupuncture points. The bladder and the kidney are interrelated and need to be looked at in the same context of equal importance.

Paul will work with these channels, not only to help with related symptoms that could stem from a Water imbalance e.g. lower back pain, certain fertility issues, fatigue, poor concentration etc. but to help you rediscover your courage, as well as the Water element’s natural wisdom.

The Water Element in Classical 5 Element Acupuncture

Water completes the cycle of the 5 Elements and is shown here by the Chinese character of Shui. This is symbolic of the main current of water flowing through the middle, with little streams whirling out from it.

Water corresponds to the season of winter and the direction of North. A Water element type would exhibit a blueish skin tone and the predominant emotion is fear. This can manifest by people becoming frozen, unable to move forward or trying to fill their lives in an attempt to run from their fear. As we have seen throughout this series, people with an imbalance may exhibit the opposite; in this case a complete lack of fear.

Physically an imbalance of Water can present itself through symptoms such as fatigue, exhaustion, endocrine disorders, hypertension, urinary tract problems and kidney issues. Mentally, Water elements may suffer with obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety and phobias.

When in balance a Water element can find a way around any obstacle, they are persistent and determined. Water always finds a way. Related to wisdom and knowledge, when in balance, a Water element will readily share these attributes.

The Metal Element in Ba Zi Chinese Astrology

Metal element Ba Zi stuff today; think of yin Metal as like jewellery and yang metal as more like an axe. The Rooster and Monkey represent Metal in a Ba Zi chart too.

A Ba Zi chart is generally made up of at least four pillars. Each pillar has a yin or yang element on top and one of the 12 Chinese animals on the bottom. This year's pillar - 2011 - is a yin Metal Rabbit. So, as the Rabbit is yin Wood in nature, there’s an elemental clash here. Not quite as aggressive as 2010’s yang Metal Tiger - picture an axe striking a tree - this year’s more symbolic of scissors cutting grass; still a clash, but in a different way.

Well known yin Metal personalities include Gordon Brown, David Cameron, George W. Bush and Angelina Jolie. Famous yang Metal day elements include Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, Martin Luther King and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Officials of the Metal Element

The organs of the Metal element are the lungs and large intestine. These officials are interrelated, as one brings goodness and vitality into the body and the other expels the waste and bi–products.

The lung takes the energy from the outside of the body to the inside, it takes what it needs from the air it’s inhaled and then expels what it doesn’t need when it exhales. The lung official then circulates this vital energy throughout the body, mind and spirit. It breathes fresh air and life into our whole being and it also gets rid of the stale and tainted air that resides within us. In classical Chinese medicine it’s seen as the “receiver of pure Qi from the heavens”.

The large intestine is the official of drainage and dregs. It’s responsible for getting rid of the waste from the body that can cause blockages and problems when things are not running smoothly. Of course this also applies to the mind and spirit, as if things are allowed to build up and are not cleared out on a regular basis then they will rot and become stale. This can lead to the spirit and mind becoming clogged up and not able to move forward.

When out of balance a Metal-type can relentlessly seek fulfilment outside of themselves, in quest of perfection at one extreme or resigning themselves to under-achievement at the other.

Metal is linked to the father, as the Earth is to the mother and when in balance the Metal-type can find the self-respect and authority they need to discover that they’re already complete and perfect just the way they are.

The Metal Element in Classical 5 Element Acupuncture

Moving on to the Metal element today… Remember the character for Earth? It’s found within the Chinese symbol for Metal ‘Jin’ (pictured). There’s an extra line representing further depths of the earth and the two dashes are indicative of gold nuggets buried deep underground. The ‘roof’ shape is covering these hidden riches.

Metal corresponds to the autumn, the time of rising yin. Its qualities include connection, inspirational quality and purity and it's associated with the directions West and North West. A pallid white complexion can suggest a Metal element causitive factor, especially beneath the eyes.

The emotion for this element is grief and is represented by an inability to let go and move forward in life. This can be characterised by someone always thinking "if only..." and being full of regret. At the other extreme the imbalance could see a person demonstrating a complete disregard for loss.

Physically an imbalance of Metal can be seen in various skin conditions which in turn lead to breathing problems such as asthma, hay fever and bronchitis. Those with such an imbalance may be drawn to pungent foods that contain hot spices, garlic and aromatic vegetables which can work to unblock the airways.

When in balance a Metal element is courageous, ambitious and self-reliant. It's Paul's job to bring about this balance when he identifies Metal as the causative factor.

The Earth Element in Ba Zi Chinese Astrology

If you’ve been following our 5 Weeks, 5 Elements articles on our blog, you’ll know by now that each element is divided into yin and yang in Ba Zi Chinese Astrology.

So, yang Earth is like a mountain, stones, rocks etc. as opposed to yin earth which is symbolised by soil. Your Ba Zi chart may also include yang Earth found in the Dragon and Dog and/or yin Earth in the shape of the Sheep and Ox.

This information is essential to the reading your chart and it makes a difference where the elements appear e.g. year, month, day and hour in relation to what they may mean.

Famous yang Earth day elements include Victoria & David Beckham, Michael Jackson and Una Stubbs. Well-known yin Earth day personalities are Cheryl Cole, Barack Obama, Mel Gibson and Bruce Willis.

The Officials of the Earth Element

The Earth element is all about nourishment and nurturing, about taking on board food and digesting and distributing it around the body. This is done by its two officials; the stomach and the spleen.

As well as nourishing the body we must also look after the mind and spirit equally. It’s important for us to digest knowledge and information in order to keep the mind active. By feeding our minds we’re making ourselves feel secure and able to cope with problems because of the knowledge and experiences we’ve stored up.

Someone with a stomach imbalance may have a very vacant look about them, they’re unable to digest any facts or information that may be given to them and they’ll show signs of confusion and anxiety if overloaded.

The same distress can manifest itself when the official of the spleen is imbalanced. Physically, the spleen is the transporter and if this function isn’t working smoothly this can lead to bloating after you eat and/or cravings for low nutrient foods. On a mental level worry and stress can then set in which can cause as much of a problem as a physical slow down or blockage in the body.

From Paul’s studies of the Earth element and its officials, it’s clear that they’re integral to the efficient running and maintenance of our mind, body and spirit. So, from a 5 Element Acupuncture perspective, it’s important to make sure your stomach and spleen are sustained and balanced.

The Earth Element in Classical 5 Element Acupuncture

The Chinese character for Earth (pictured) is Tu and represents the subsoil, topsoil and the vertical line shows the sprouting plant.

Earth, in Classical 5 Element Acupuncture, corresponds to late summer - a time of harvest and abundance. The equally ancient practice of Feng Shui links Earth to the directions North East, South West and the Centre.

The colour for Earth is yellow and this can clearly manifest in the skin tone. The emotion is sympathy and when an ‘earth type’ is in balance they’re centred, understanding and very generous.

When a person with Earth as their predominant element is unbalanced, they may display a sense of neediness and emptiness, demanding a lot of sympathy. At the other extreme Earth types can even seem uncaring.

Physically unbalanced Earth can manifest as digestive problems e.g. IBS, gynaecological problems, being underweight/overweight and fertility issues. Mentally an imbalance could result in eating disorders, insecurity and a craving for attention.

If Paul determines this element to be your primary causative factor (predominant element) based on colour, odour, sound and emotion, he will create a unique acupuncture treatment plan to address the imbalance.

When in balance an Earth element has the ability to 'digest' information and is able to effectively nourish and support others.

The Fire Element in Ba Zi Chinese Astrology

In Ba Zi Chinese Astrology, you have yin Fire and yang Fire and your chart may also feature the yin Fire Snake and the Horse, which is yang Fire.

Yin Fire is represented as a candle flame, where as yang Fire can be likened to the Sun. You can see how simply describing yourself as a ‘Fire type’ could be a little limiting, with such a difference in these elemental representations. There are many other factors involved in determining the strength of your day element too.

At a basic level, famous yin Fire day elements include: Tony Blair, Camilla Parker Bowles, David Bowie and Tom Hanks. Prominent yang Fire personalities are Russell Crowe, Dawn French, Steve Jobs and Nelson Mandela.

The Officials of the Fire Element

Unlike the other elements the fire element has four officials. These are the heart, which is the supreme controller and the small intestine, which is in control of transforming matter, separating the pure from the impure. Also, the pericardium - the heart protector and lastly the triple heater is the official of balance and harmony.

As one of the most vital officials of the body, the heart is also known as the Emperor and, as such, needs to be in control so that we feel settled. Its spiritual aspect is called shen and if disturbed, this can lead to insomnia and absent-mindedness.

Aside from taking an in-depth history and discussing your symptoms etc. Paul will also look at your eyes, if they’re bright and shining this is indicative of healthy shen. If they're dull and lacklustre he'll look to nourish the heart and calm the shen.

The Fire Element in Classical 5 Element Acupuncture

So, do you resonate with the Wood element or know someone who does? Maybe you’ll feel a stronger connection with the next element - Fire.

‘Huo’ is the Chinese character for Fire (pictured) and it’s symbolic of dancing or fire rising. Representing the summer, South and the colour red, a Fire type can be described as passionate, friendly, enthusiastic and compassionate.

Often with a rosy or red complexion, the Fire person's dominant emotion is Joy. Like the emotion of anger for Wood, this can manifest at either extreme as an excess of joy or a lack, leading to sadness. Problems in relationships can also derive from an out of balance Fire element, either from not letting others in or by being too open without determining whether someone is trustworthy.

When in balance, they can be happy, playful, full of laughter and are great communicators. They are effective networkers and, when healthy, Fire elements can truly listen to the needs of people in their lives.

The Wood Element in Ba Zi Chinese Astrology

In Ba Zi Chinese astrology the 5 elements are divided into yin and yang, which will make a difference as to how they’re read in your birthchart. So, you may have yang Wood and yin Wood elements appearing in your chart or luck pillars. It may also feature the Tiger and/or Rabbit, which are considered yang Wood and yin Wood respectively.

Yang Wood is symbolised by tall, strong trees and Yin Wood is represented by plants, vines etc. The whole chart will comprise some, or all, of the 5 elements and this will have a bearing on your character, potential, relationships, health etc.

A quick look at Andy Murray’s Ba Zi chart reveals he’s a yang Wood person. Yang Wood types can be likened to trees; strong and determined to reach the top. Often straightforward communicators, Yang ‘Gap’ Wood personalities often tell it like it is, so if you’re looking for a candid opinion Andy’s likely to provide one.

When I draft a chart, I form a picture by looking at the interactions between all of the elements present (or missing) in the year, month, day and hour you were born. Although, it really needs to be looked at in relation to the chart, discovering if there was yin or yang Wood qi on your day of birth will reveal a lot about your basic traits too.

Other famous yang Wood day elements include: Elvis Presley, Bruce Lee, Richard Branson and Katie Price a.k.a. Jordan. Some well-known yin Wood personalities are Brad Pitt, Princess Diana, Prince William and Madonna.

The Officials of the Wood Element

In 5 Element theory, the organs of the Wood element are the liver and gallbladder. These two officials can be likened to the Architect and the Site Foreman on a building site, one makes the plans and the other makes the decisions on how to put these plans into progress.

The liver carries on planning for our futures and without this service you'd flounder and loose direction. When your Wood element is in balance, the liver gives you the power to be flexible, so when things don’t quite go as expected, the liver will give you the adaptability to change your plans.

The gallbladder is the official of decision making and judgment; if it’s weak you may find you lack the courage or initiative to make choices. Balanced, you’ll be able to take action and will have more drive to realise your goals.

The Wood Element in Classical 5 Element Acupuncture

So, ‘5 Weeks, 5 Elements’ saw us taking a look at each of the Chinese elements - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water on Facebook. For anyone that missed it, we'll be reposting the whole series here on our blog over the next 5 days.

We began with Wood, the Chinese element that’s associated with the East, Southeast, the colour green and the season of spring.

The Chinese character for Wood ‘mu’ (pictured) represents a tree. So, it makes sense that this element’s attributes are strength and flexibility. When there’s an imbalance in a Wood type person, they may find themselves stuck in a rut and unable to move forward but, when balanced, this element allows us to grow and take action in our lives.

Each element is linked with an emotion and in the case of Wood this is anger, which can manifest at either extreme when out of balance. Of course, we all get angry from time-to-time, but do you get angry really quickly? Or, are you unable to express your anger - it’s there just under the surface, but people think you’re completely apathetic? Anger in its negative sense can lead to great frustration and irritation, but Wood types who can take a step back, and perhaps use this emotion positively, can draw upon the benevolence that’s inherent in the Wood element to bring about a change for good.

5 Weeks, 5 Elements

Both Paul Adkins and I utilise the 5 Elements in our practice at The Mitchell Hill Clinic in Truro, in Chinese astrology (ba zi), feng shui and traditional acupuncture respectively.

The use of the 5 Elements in Chinese Metaphysics or the Five Arts is a vast and ancient subject and can reveal a lot about you as a person and how to bring balance to your life.

As an area of our practice that fascinates many of our clients, we thought that it would be an interesting idea to combine our knowledge and spend each week taking a look at one of the 5 Elements on Facebook.

So, to begin with we'll be providing a little insight into the Wood Element. Perhaps, Paul's diagnosed you as a Wood Element when you've come for treatment and you're keen to find out more. Alternatively, maybe I've discovered you're a Yin/Yang Wood Daymaster or found a predominance of Wood when I've drafted your birthchart? Maybe you'll know someone who's character traits fit some of the info over the next week!

Although, Paul and I arrive at our conclusions in different ways, it's interesting to see how often we determine someone as having the same predominant element. We're always looking at ways of combining the two ancient practices of acupuncture and ba zi, as utilising both may really provide optimum benefit to the patient.

Acupuncture Treatment
When you come to see Traditional 5 Element Acupuncturist Paul Adkins, whatever the problem, he will begin work on identifying which Element you are. If he evaluates you as, say a Wood Element, this will then enable him to treat you using particular points associated with Wood and to remove any blocks. His aim is always to balance the mind, body and spirit, which in turn may help many problems and conditions.

Chinese Astrology (Ba Zi)
I identify your elemental make-up by hand-drafting your birth chart or ba zi. This will enable me to firstly establish what your daymaster or Chinese element was on the day that you were born. I will then look at how this interacts with the 9 elements that appear on the heavenly stems and branches of your chart. Finally looking at the 'hidden' elements to form a strong picture of you. This information can be useful in revealing aspects such as your personality traits, family background, relationships, career choices, health issues and finances. Most importantly, it may act as a transformational experience to bring balance, maximise your potential or help you to move forward.

Tension Headache? Three Acupressure Points That May Alleviate the Pain

Treatment protocols and techniques in acupuncture can be relatively intricate and a wide range of factors are taken into account before I arrive at a diagnosis and prepare a treatment plan that's unique to you.

Point location itself is complex and takes many years to master, but there are some points that can be used successfully with basic acupressure techniques. The points that follow have quite common purposes and don't solely rely on an in-depth diagnosis to prove beneficial. Of course it's best to visit your acupuncturist first to determine the best course of treatment for your particular condition.

Caution: Do not use any of the following points if pregnant, or if you think you could be pregnant.

In my experience, the following acupressure points are effective for helping to alleviate headaches. Simply apply light pressure and use a gentle circling motion with your index finger or middle finger over the points highlighted on our Clinic ‘Meridian Man’ and described in more detail below. Try to spend at least 5 minutes on each.

Large Intestine 4 This is one of the better known acupressure points for relieving headaches; found in the fleshy area where your index finger and thumb bone meet. Its Chinese name is He Gu, which in English means Union Valley. Especially good for headaches at the front of the head, this is a point I use for a range of facial issues. Do not use if pregnant.

Gallbladder 14 The Chinese name for this point is Yang Bai and it’s located around an inch above the middle of your eyebrows, you can use acupressure simultaneously on both the left and right side of your head.

Yin Tang If you’re one of my regular acupuncture patients, it’s likely that you will have experienced the effects of this wonderful extra point. Known as Hall of Seal in English; this point calms the spirit. Many of my patients love this one and have likened the sensation to the switching off of a computer, as their mind begins to quieten and they relax into the couch.

So, hopefully these acupressure points will prove useful to you. Please feel free to share this post with anyone who may find it of benefit.

How Can a Doula Help With Birth Physiology?

The Mitchell Hill Clinic is home to the Cornwall Natural Fertility Centre and we've brought together a fantastic team of skilled practitioners to help at every stage of your journey.

Rachel McEvoy (pictured left) is a qualified Doula (for more information, please see What is a Doula and How Can They Support You?) and this month she shares her experience in Birth Physiology.

"As a Doula I work with clients helping prepare them for an empowering and positive birth experience and a large part of the work I do in antenatal sessions is discussing and exploring Birth Physiology which, put simply, is how the human body births a baby. I am fascinated by the human body and really enjoy exploring this aspect of childbirth with clients.

It is very important to realise that birth is not a procedure but a process and this process is pretty unpredictable and variable. No two birth experiences are exactly the same, but the process our bodies go through are the same as that of our ancestors and it all comes down to understanding body chemistry and the factors that drive labour and the factors that can stall labour.

Chemicals / Hormones are so important in a labouring woman and the organ that controls this process is the brain, but it is important to know there are positive and negative hormones released during labour and to get a positive birth experience you want high levels of positive hormones and none of the negative ones.

It is the hypothalamus and pituitary gland that are responsible for secreting positive hormones and these hormonal agents originate in our OLD or PRIMITIVE brain. Oxytocin is called the hormone of love. It makes us feel good, triggers nurturing behaviour and is a potent stimulator of contractions.

Endorphins are a natural morphine like substance produced by our bodies when in pain. Endorphins have a calming and pain relieving affect that when in high enough levels produce an altered state of consciousness in a labouring woman allowing her to be free of inhibitions, flow with the labour and let go!

On the flip side is Adrenalin which is a negative hormone during labour. It originates from the NEO-CORTEX or THINKING brain. Adrenalin is often called the fight or flight hormone as it is produced by mammals to ensure survival. When a labouring woman feels scared, frightened or is interrupted she produces high levels of adrenalin which slows down or can even stop labour.

Once women and their birth partners understand this concept we can then look at how they can reduce the thinking brain activity of the labouring woman. An important role of a birth partner is knowing the factors that increase this brain stimulation and them then aiming to reduce this accordingly.

These factors include:

Language – communication stimulates our thinking brain so it is important that all birth attendants keep a low profile, are quiet and leave the woman alone as much as is possible.

Bright Light – visual stimulation influences brain activity so keeping lights dim in the birth space reduces this stimulation. Think about when you go to bed, what do you do? We tend to turn off the lights, close the curtains and shut our eyes, therefore reducing our brain activity.

Being Observed – we all feel different when we are being observed or watched. Privacy reduces brain activity so it is important for birth attendants to be there but not in the face of a labouring woman. I ask my clients to think about a cat giving birth – she doesn’t give birth in the middle of a busy kitchen or lounge where there is lots of people, noise and activity. She takes herself off to a dark, quiet space where she knows she will not be disturbed and easily and naturally allows her body to birth her babies. Humans deserve and need that same feeling of privacy.

Security – a woman needs to feel safe and secure to give birth more easily. She must not feel observed or judged by anyone with her.

Baking a cake is a good analogy for Birth Physiology and Labour - You need the correct ingredients and a specific method for the best outcome be it a cake or a baby."

How Can Identifying Your Core Values Bring Balance to Your Life?

Geraldine Lavery is our Professional & Personal Coach at The Mitchell Hill Clinic. This month she explains 'core values' and why honouring them can help you to clarify your goals.

"We all have values that help us make choices about what we commit to in our lives. If you spend time and energy on something that goes against your core values you are likely to feel resentful and frustrated. Similarly if you spend too much time committing to one value and ignoring the others your life will feel unbalanced; not honouring your values in your activities and relationships, you will get a nagging feeling that something is missing or wrong in your life.

In this context values are the things that matter most to you, the essence of who you are; what is important to you; what you care about and what you want from your life. Values act as a guide to our behaviour, indicating how we can be true to ourselves. When we honour our values on a regular and consistent basis, life is good and fulfilling. Important life decisions such as changing your job are easier to make when guided by a real understanding of your core values.

Our values have usually been long-established, often in childhood, and are still driving our behaviour years later – simply because we don’t know about them and therefore don’t know if they are still relevant to us today. For example as a child, to work hard in everything you do may have instilled a value of achievement; however, you might also alongside that have another value such as playfulness. An imbalance can set in when you focus exclusively on the achievement without realising or acknowledging that playfulness is also a core value. As a consequence you may be a high achiever but feeling unfulfilled without knowing why. There may be frustration because there is not enough fun in your life.

Identifying your core values isn’t always easy to do and working with a coach can help you establish what yours are, and how to honour them in everything you do. You are then in a much stronger position to live a fulfilled life (making decisions founded upon self awareness) and have a clear sense of what is important to you."

What is a Doula and How Can They Support You?

As many of you will know, The Mitchell Hill Clinic - Acupuncture & Natural Health Centre is home to the Cornwall Natural Fertility Centre and, alongside Paul Adkins' services as a Zita West Affiliated Fertility Acupuncturist, we are able to call upon some wonderful complementary specialists.

We are pleased to be working with Rachel McEvoy at the Clinic who, as a trained Doula, is able to support you in the latter stages of pregnancy and beyond. Here Rachel explains more about what a Doula is and how she can help...

The word Doula translates as "Mothering the Mother" and I truly believe that every woman deserves a Doula. A Doula is trained to enable her to provide emotional and practical support to a woman and her family during pregnancy, childbirth and the period of time following the birth. A Doula is not medically trained and works alongside medical staff acting as an advocate for you to enable a positive and empowering pregnancy, labour and birth experience.

I understand that each woman is different and therefore needs individualised support based on their circumstances and preferences. My aim is to help provide a supportive and safe environment for a woman to give birth. I will give unconditional emotional, physical and informative support to every woman and her partner regardless of her choices for childbirth. I truly want every family to experience pregnancy and the birth process as a safe, empowering and memorable rite of passage.

Research has shown that having a Doula present at birth can:

reduce the length of labour
decrease the chance of caesarean section
decrease the need for pain medication
help the partner participate with confidence
reduces the need for medical intervention
increases success in breastfeeding

Overall increasing a positive birth outcome bringing health benefits to both the mother and the baby.

Being emotionally prepared for birth is so important and during antenatal sessions we can discuss any previous birth experiences/fears enabling a positive future birth. Topics discussed include Birth Physiology, Optimal Foetal Positioning, Labour Signs, Labour Positions, Coping Strategies, Pain Relief, 3rd Stage and Birth Plans.

As your Doula during your pregnancy I can help you to formulate or review your birth plan and provide you with information and resources to enable you to make the right choices for you and your baby. I will be on call for you from 38 weeks (earlier if needed) and during your labour will remain with you supporting you and your birth partner emotionally and physically until your baby is born and will stay with you until you are settled and are happy for me to leave. This continuity of care is so important in making a labouring woman feel safe and secure allowing her to birth her baby.

I am also a qualified Breastfeeding Peer Supporter and help run a local Breastfeeding Group every week in Truro. I can therefore offer breastfeeding support and advise should you need it.

Belladona	Number 1 Remedy for Very High Fevers Patient is burning hot and red. Eyes are glassy and pupils dilated. Complaints have a sudden onset. Thirsty and crave lemonade.	Better for lying down. Worse for touch, jarring, movement. At 3am.

Japanese Acupuncturist Studies Facial Enhancement Acupuncture in Truro

Japanese acupuncturist Takao Ueda made the long journey from East to West to study Cosmetic Acupuncture with leading practitioner Paul Adkins in Truro last week.

Paul is the Principal of The Mitchell Hill Clinic and the founder of Facial Enhancement Acupuncture - a skill developed in 2004 and provides a real alternative to traditional facials, face lifts and Botox.

Ask the Herbalist: Stress & Anxiety

Question: I have been suffering with high levels of stress and anxiety for several years now; I seem to carry stress from events of the past which I can’t shake off. My doctor has offered me anti-depressants but I’m not sure if that’s the right choice. Is there anything I can do naturally to help?

Answer: Stress was described as the “20th Century Disease” in a 1992 United Nations report but what does that mean? We certainly had stress before so what’s changed? As we take on more and more responsibilities in life it stands to reason that the stress associated with them will increase, along with the many benefits of modern living it also gives us more reasons to worry. The problem with this is that the major stressful times in our lives such as bereavement are less tolerable because of the multitude of smaller issues we face on a daily basis.

Stress is a fundamental part of life and you will never be able to avoid it completely nor would it be beneficial to you to do so, but there are some things you can do to increase your tolerance to it and therefore cope with it better. Often it is managing the ‘little things’ that helps the most, this is because firstly they are easier to deal with and secondly when you don’t let the little things bother you as much it makes the bigger things all the more possible to recover from.

The first thing to do is understand your limitations, don’t be too hard on yourself when you struggle to cope. In the same way you would show compassion to one of your friends who was going through a difficult time you should also show the same compassion to yourself. If you feel you are being overwhelmed by anxiety it is important to give time to yourself to recover from it in much the same way you would from an illness. Care for yourself the same as you would for a loved one by doing things you know will help to alleviate stress; it is amazing how much taking the time to have a long bath or spend a few hours outside walking will help to instantly restore a sense of well-being.

While we’re on the subject of taking time for yourself, I would certainly recommend meditation. This doesn’t have to have any kind of religious or spiritual connotation; in fact all it really means it to spend 20 minutes each day, or however long you like, sitting quietly without any distractions. This helps in two ways; firstly it has an immediate calmative effect on the system and secondly it allows you to sit with and examine the issues that are affecting you as opposed to the often normal practice of trying to avoid them.

A reliable way to raise your tolerance to stress is to exercise; in addition to being healthy physically it will also very quickly make you feel calm and more at ease with yourself. This doesn’t require going to the gym or purchasing expensive equipment; make use of what nature has given you by enjoying the outdoors. Try going for a walk for as little as 30 minutes each day, you will feel better in yourself for having done it. If I had to offer one way to reduce the negative effect of stress this would be it.

Finally there are a whole host of herbs that can help, but it is important to remember that while we may be trying to reduce the stress of modern life we still have to be a part of it so knowing which herbs will genuinely help and which will simply sedate you is often troublesome. I tend to believe that a simpler, gentler approach is far better and is more likely to induce a permanent change in your life than some of the more immediate interventions. A daily cup of chamomile tea is a great start, it is gentle enough to not cause you any other problems associated with taking it and it has a pleasant calming effect that can last for hours without leaving you feeling sedated. Valerian also works very well, particularly as a tincture, and can help a lot if you’re having difficulty sleeping due to anxiety. The class of herbs called Adaptogens are useful in helping you to cope with new instances of stress and one of the best examples of this is Siberian Ginseng which has been shown to help particularly well with insomnia, neuroses and imbalances in blood pressure. There are many more than I can list here but the examples I have given are reliable and easy for you to acquire from any health food shop.

Ultimately stress has to be managed from within and often there is no single answer but instead a range of changes in your life need to be made. But these changes will always start with a first step and quite often that first step is the most important one you’ll take as it will show you that you are more than capable of overcoming the difficulties in your life without having to resort to medical intervention.

IVF & Herbs

A common question from patients going through in vitro fertilisation treatment is what herbal medicine they should take. IVF is the process whereby eggs are removed from the ovaries and fertilised in a laboratory using a sperm sample before being returned to the uterus, during this process some very strong medications will be used and as such you should not take any herbal medicine during this time. Many women going through IVF have chosen to self-medicate using some very well known herbal medicines, this is inadvisable and you should always follow to the advice of your IVF consultant.

However, herbal medicine can be of benefit while preparing for IVF, both for the woman and the man. Herbs can be used to address issues such as endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, recurring miscarriage and male fertility problems, herbal medicine can be taken safely and successfully in the months preceding IVF treatment which may help to balance the system and promote healthy follicle development.

Another thing to consider during this time is taking a whole food based multi-vitamin as well as considering carefully what foods to take and avoid. Lifestyle choices play a major part in fertility and one of the most valuable things you can do while trying to conceive is to make sure your diet and lifestyle are healthy and balanced.

One often overlooked IVF issue is male fertility, it is often thought that the quality of sperm is not especially important during IVF as the egg will be fertilised manually. It is estimated that approximately 30% of infertility cases are due to inadequate sperm quality while most early miscarriages are influenced by the way the sperm and the egg interact, this shows that the importance of healthy sperm is not limited to fertilisation. There are many herbal medicines which may help to increase the quality of the sperm in the run up to IVF treatment, but it shouldn’t be forgotten that healthy lifestyle choices are just as important for the man as they are for the woman.

Although the nature of IVF does limit your choices when it comes to herbal medicine, there is still a great deal you can do to increase your chances of success and, used correctly, herbs can help to provide the best possible environment for a happy, healthy pregnancy.

08.08.08 was a special day for us as we held our official launch as The Mitchell Hill Clinic - Acupuncture & Natural Health Centre at 7 Mitchell Hill, Truro, Cornwall, UK.

One year on today, we are pleased to say that our holistic centre is thriving and we have many people visiting us for a whole range of relaxing, rejuvinating and healing treatments.

Our Acupuncturist and Clinic Manager Paul Adkins had been practising independently from his clinic across the road at no. 12 Mitchell Hill since 2004, so expanding and moving premises was a big and exciting change for us.

Since then, we haven't looked back and we have had so many lovely comments from visitors to the clinic from "so tranquil and zen" to:

Tranquility seems to be the key word here and we hope that we have created a place to escape and relax, but most importantly to us, a place to feel safe and comfortable to discuss your requirements with our practitioners.

Building Your Therapy Practice Workshop

Jade Massage Roller Workshop

Paul Adkins will be running Jade Massage Workshops in both August and September 2009. Paul is a Traditional 5 Element Acupuncturist and the founder of Facial Enhancement Acupuncture. He teaches the latter to acupuncturists worldwide and via his online school.

Paul uses jade rollers during every cosmetic treatment he performs. Utilising acupressure and massage techniques with the jade rollers increases the effects of Paul's acupuncture facials, improving elasticity, tone and complexion.

The workshops will teach acupressure points and massage techniques using these Chinese beauty tools. By the end of the two hour class you will be able to use them effectively on yourself and friends.

The course includes your very own set of jade massage rollers, which some retailers are selling for as much as £45.00.

For optimum results these rollers should be used daily and can be rolled on the face, neck and decolletage. If used regularly and correctly they encourage blood to the surface of the skin, thus improving the circulation and increasing oxygen supply to the face.

Acupuncture for Arthritis

Arthritis means inflammation of the joints and according to Arthritis Care it affects over nine million people of all ages in the UK. The two most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Acupuncture can be used alongside western medicine to help ease the pain of arthritis sufferers. A study into osteoarthritis of the knee has found that acupuncture can both relieve pain and improve movement:

'Acupuncture patients showed a 40% decrease in pain and a nearly 40% improvement in knee function'.

Dr. Madeleine Devey of the Arthritis Research campaign states on the BBC's Health site that:

'It is extremely encouraging to see a well conducted clinical trial on a complementary therapy for OA that demonstrates a positive effect.'

A German study published in 'Arthritis and Rheumatism' compared the experience of 357 patients given acupuncture. The benefits were measured on the WOMAC scale which measures pain, stiffness and mobility. Before treatment the patient's scores were about 50. After 3 months and 15 treatments, those treated had WOMAC scores of about 30. These trials were carried out alongside normal care.

These studies are really encouraging and show how acupuncture can play a part in alleviating the constant pain suffered by many arthritis sufferers. A testimonial, kindly given by one of my own patients, follows:

'In February 2005, I was discharged from hospital with an immobility problem.
Although, this improved slightly by exercise, I was only able to walk using 2 sticks.

About 18 months ago arthritis attacked my knees which was very painful. The beginning of 2008 the arthritis moved to my arms, hands, thumbs and neck. The pain factor was so severe that I was taking 2 paracetamol 4 times a day (this being the maximum dose).

In desperation I turned to The Mitchell Hill Clinic. The first treatment gave me immediate relief for 3 or 4 days then the pain started to return. The next treatment a week later once again gave me respite for a few days. After each treatment the pain factor improved tremendously, so much so I started to reduce the number of paracetamol I was taking. At the end of a month Paul Adkins suggested that I did not have treatment for 2 weeks. I was concerned that the pain would return, but did as was suggested and found the pain was reduced for 10 days.

Subsequently, the amount of treatment has been left for a month, I sometimes only take paracetamol once a day, but usually it is twice a day. Needless to say I am very impressed with the treatment received from The Mitchell Hill Clinic.' D Hollis
